Passaic Valley Water Commission provides field hydrant training for fire departments

(Clifton, N.J. – March 5, 2024) – Firefighters play a crucial role in protecting our communities, and their ability to access water quickly and effectively from hydrants is paramount in emergency situations. Last week, Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) began its field hydrant training for approximately 20 firefighters in the Borough of Prospect Park.

The training focuses on PVWC’s water system and how critical it is to open and close hydrants properly to mitigate water quality issues such as discolored water, low pressure, and main breaks. Firefighters were also trained in how to identify and report any issues with hydrants or the distribution system, ensuring timely repairs and maintenance.

“We are committed to supporting our local fire departments and ensuring they have the necessary training and resources to respond effectively to emergencies,” said PVWC Chief Operating Officer Michael Marotta. “Tonight’s hydrant training conducted by PVWC’s Mark Romain, Bobby Healey, Rakim Hill and Christian Luciano, is a service we look forward to providing our local fire departments going forward…it is vital for all of our fire departments to understand our water system,” added Marotta.

After attending the borough’s council meeting, Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed T. Khairullah joined the training session where he thanked PVWC for providing the training and spoke on the importance and appreciation of a strong relationship between PVWC and Prospect Park.

Prospect Park Fire Chief Doug Struyk, who asked PVWC to come to the borough to train newer firefighters, said the training will “undoubtedly benefit our firefighters and the community we serve.”
