Passaic Valley Water Commission awards contract for PFAS planning and basis of design

(Clifton, N.J. – August 28, 2024) – As we near the end of Water Quality Month, Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) is proud to share its commitment to improving its water system. PVWC recently awarded global engineering company Black and Veatch with a $2 million contract for the planning and basis of design for our 80 million gallons/day (MGD) surface water treatment plant in Little Falls. PFAS (Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are manufactured chemicals typically found in food packaging, non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, and firefighting foam. These chemicals can be ingested after they break down and accumulate in the air, soil and water.

“The updated regulations from the EPA require us to meet PFAS standards by 2029, which is right around the corner,” said James G. Mueller, P.E., Executive Director, Passaic Valley Water Commission. “That’s why we’ve adopted an aggressive 18-month schedule to work through the treatment technology alternatives, coordinate with other utilities and NJDEP, perform market research, develop conceptual designs and finalize a basis of design.”

The work undertaken by the PVWC team, alongside Black and Veatch, will serve as the foundation to select an appropriate project delivery method.

“We’ve been focused on PFAS and the removal of these chemicals in our water supply for a number of years, including our completion of a resin ion exchange system to remove high levels of PFAS in West Milford’s Nosenzo Pond well system in 2022. Our work to meet the 2029 EPA regulations is yet another critical step in our on-going efforts to fast-track our compliance and improve water quality for our consumers,” added Mueller.
