PVWC prepares customers for winter with essential water usage tips
Published on December 06, 2024
(Clifton, N.J. – December 6, 2024) – As winter approaches, Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) offers recommendations to conserve water and protect water pipes.
As our customers prepare their homes for frigid temperatures, PVWC asks that customers also do the following to help prevent freezing water pipes:
Insulate pipes: Protect water pipes from freezing by insulating them with tape or pipe sleeves.
Winterize outdoor plumbing: Disconnect and store garden hoses and close outdoor valves.
Check for leaks: Regularly inspect pipes for leaks. Repairing leaks promptly can prevent major issues.
Monitor water usage: Keep an eye on your water usage during colder months. Sudden spikes in consumption may indicate a leak or potential issue.
Normally, PVWC would recommend allowing faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold weather to prevent pipes from freezing. However, New Jersey’s drought warning issued in mid-November is still in place, so this is not recommended until the drought warning is lifted.
